New technology has greatly advanced dermatological treatments, from laser tattoo removal to the treatment of microblading and PMU. Gone are the days of dermabrasion and salabrasion, both primitive techniques for tattoo removal. We are now able to safely and effectively remove tattoos with the utmost precision.
Over the past few decades in particular laser tattoo removal has developed in leaps and bounds, with the introduction of pico lasers in the 2010s marking a paradigm shift in how we remove tattoos with a laser.
With pico laser removal we are now able to treat tattoos using pulse widths (that's how long the beam of light is on) measured in picoseconds - an incredibly short one trillionth of a second.
Why does that matter?
In this blog post we look at the game-changing pico laser system launched by LightSense™ in 2020 and its many applications for:
Laser tattoo removal
A pico laser for tattoo removal will remove ink pigment through the following elegant process.
The benefit of pico laser removal is that the flash of light touches the skin for as short a time as possible, reducing the chances of skin damage. Studies have investigated pico laser side effects and the impact a shorter pulse width has on skin safety. We’ll get to that later.
Microblading
Pico laser removal also works effectively on microblading, where tattoo ink pigment has been used to create the effect of, or define, eyebrows.
Melina, Head of Partnerships at NAAMA Studios, believes that microblading is precisely where the LightSense™ laser system shines.
“We can shape according to the tattoo, so the outer area will have very little damage because of how precise we are,” she says.
When applying the laser to a person’s face it is crucially important that the laser is accurate and that the expert consultant is able to direct it in a controlled manner.
The minuscule LightSense™ laser system spot size of just 0.4mm is smaller than the nib of a pen. “This allows us to treat half eyebrows for clients that want just the tail of the brow.”
The LightSense™ laser system has taken pico laser removal and adapted it for the specific requirements of microblading treatments.
PMU
Permanent makeup, for example on a person’s lips or hairline, is yet another application for pico laser removal.
The treatments are effective and mean that PMU is, contrary to the name, no longer entirely permanent. It is possible to completely remove permanent makeup over a number of treatments with the LightSense™ laser system.
There are many advantages of pico laser removal. Because the flash of light touches the skin for as short a period of time as possible, there is less chance of damage being caused. This proposition has been the subject of research.
According to a 2021 article published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, Wolfgang Bäumler et al. found that:
“Subjects felt significantly less pain with PSL than with NSL [picosecond and nanosecond lasers...] Transient adverse reactions were statistically less pronounced, lasting shorter for PSL as for NSL, especially blistering, pruritus, and burning sensation.”
With less damage to the skin, it is also possible to treat tattoos with pico laser removal more often. Shorter periods of downtime are required before the skin can be treated again.
The cumulative effect of this means that laser tattoo removal no longer has to take years to achieve, as was the case with some traditional methods of removal.
